Weekly Report 6 ~ 'Lose My Mind'
Weekly Report 6 ~ 'Lose My Mind'
Another week of ISM has past, and we have now entered what people like to call ‘the most stressful part of ISM’ : cold calling. After making interview contact lists a few weeks prior, the class has begun to start cold- calling, were you reach out to professionals who work in the class’s fields of study. Looking at my list before I started, I thought 15 contacts was more than enough for calling and that I would easily get a least one interview out of the list. However, after calling all but one contact from the list, I have not gotten one interview. Only an email to the marketing office or a robot message saying, ‘please leave a message at the beep.’ Despite previously being told that cold-calling would be extremely difficult, I didn’t really believe it to be true until now.
On the other hand, although cold calling has been beyond frustrating, whether I get an interview or not I know that every call is a learning experience for me and what I don’t gain in professional guidance, I am able to practice and learn from my mistakes. In addition to cold calling being beneficial to my future career, I feel it is also bringing our class together. Because cold-calling is so challenging, when someone does get an interview during school with a professional, the class celebrates. This really allows the class to bond and encourage one another to continue being successful throughout the year.
In conclusion, although I am really struggling to find a professional and perform an interview, I know all the troubles I am having now will come back and majorly benefit me in the future, building not only stronger social skills but stronger professional communication and presentation skills as well.
